Technology developed at Imeko for the production of Celion

IMEKO’s Tech

IMEKO identified in cigarette butts a highly polluting waste with great potential: the filter made of cellulose acetate. This led them to ask:

What if we could recover this material in its entirety? What if we recycled cigarette butts?

We recover acetate

We eliminate toxicity

36% lower carbon footprint

    Scalable and exportable technology

PROCESS

Through a fully sustainable, purpose-designed chemical process, we remove all toxic substances contained in cigarette butts and recover the valuable cellulose acetate that makes up the filter.

I

Solid waste removal

II

Cigarette-butt acetate purification

III

Pellet and sheet transformation

Completely mechanical separation of solid waste (paper, ashes, tobacco) with unique developed machinery and processes

Extraction and elimination of toxic substances contained in cellulose acetate fiber through sustainable chemical technology

Physico-chemical transformation of purified cellulose acetate fiber into bioacetate pellets

Attributes

  • Scalable technology based on mechanical and chemical principles

  • Only solution in the world that obtains pure acetate from cigarette butts

  • Celion is formulated without toxic additives

  • Sustainable process from its design: low water and energy consumption, and recirculation of all inputs

  • >90% of the process waste is recovered

  • Intellectually protected
